Diane Kruger was born in West Germany in Algermissen, near Hildesheim, on July 15, 1976, to computer specialist Hans-Heinrich Heidkrüger and his bank employee wife, Maria-Theresa. Diane was raised as a devout Catholic and went to Catholic school. One of her grandmothers was Polish, she has revealed. Stefan, her younger brother, grew up with her in West Germany.
When she was a teenager, her mother enrolled her in student exchange programs to help her improve her English. Kruger wanted to be a ballerina as a youngster and auditioned for the Royal Ballet School in London, but her ballet career was cut short due to a knee injury. Kruger afterward worked as a model in Paris and began learning the language.

Diane Kruger began modeling after representing Germany in the Elite Model Look in 1993. After opting to pursue a career in acting, she progressively ceased modeling.
