He was praised by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau for being a good skater. Bure recorded 298 points in three seasons with Spokane and stands fourth on the Cheifs all-time scoring list.

Valeri made his debut internationally with the Russian National Junior Team in World Junior Championship in 1994. He became the leading scorer with the bronze medal in six games and was named to the tournament’s All-Star Team. In 1996, he appeared in one game at the inaugural World Cup of Hockey. At the CSKA Moscow tournament, he scored one goal and Russia advanced to the gold medal game. After the tournament, he returned for the 2002 Salt Lake Games and scored a goal.

Russia won the bronze medal in the tournament. In 2010, Valeri returned to the ice as a contestant on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s figure skating reality show “Battle of the Blades” in the second season. Ekaterina Gordeeva was the partner of Valeri. They won the competition and got $100,000 US dollars. The pair donated the prize to Compassion Canada.
